The Stays Project
This has been put on hold at the moment while we concentrate on The Mantua Project but it’s going to be on going as we try and understand these beautifully crafted garments.
We’ve studied stays now at the following museums:
- Bankfield Museum
- Bath Fashion Museum
- Berrington Hall
- Edinburgh – NMS Collections Centre
- Hereford Collections Centre
- Manchester Costume Galleries
- Museum of London
And in our Study sessions we follow the same protocol as we do with any garment, look at stitching methods, take a pattern, take good detailed videos and photos, make sketches and then return to our workrooms and work on a replica. However, this is where this project has slowed right down. Currently we’ve only worked on 3 actual replicas but have made about 5 pairs of stays not suing the methods and techniques we’ve learnt.
We have a super-duper chart where we record and compare our findings, and are on the constant look out for images that show how the stays were worn and treated.
We’ll be updating this page further as we are in the middle of creating our website so watch this space for more information and images.
