The Mantua Project so far…
The ivory mantua in this photo is our BATMC.I.09.1406 Mantua replica and the original can be found in the Bath Fashion Museum collection. It has been dated c.1760s and features an Oblong hoop styled petticoat, a Long Straight Train and Double Flounces.
The original wearer was not as small as people like to believe about the ‘old days’ but was a fairly chunky size 14- 16 with fairly broad arms. However her dress was light and beautifully embroidered and she must have looked amazing as she swished across the court state rooms at either St James’ or Kensington Palace.
The other gown in the photo is our replica of SNO.7 – a 1760s Nightgown and one which we’d studied with the purpose to compare the sewing methods to the Mantua (both being from the 1760s).
