The Georgian Costume Company

Display Hire

With the desire to bring a fresh connection for visitors and broaden the expanse of their experience, our costume displays have been designed and created for this purpose; to bring the history home.

Our displays fall into 3 categories:

  • Flexible Mannequins: These mannequins are subtly designed to tell a story, create a scene and fill in the sense of everyday lives from history. They are dressed completely historically accurate, from the first layer of the shift or shirt, right through to the many layers worn in the clothing of the 18th century. All our research goes right into the details with these garments. These displays will come with facts sheets for the room guides, can include a talk on dressing and other interactive tools.
  • Tailor's Dummies Displays: Create that traditional style display of gowns and garments in any room - from a single mannequin to 'interest up' a corner, to a whole range showing the development of a single style of dress, or the date range of costume featured within the property. These Tailored Dummies can be incredibly versatile and work well to bring fashion nearer to the experience of the visitor.
  • Research Displays: Our research can be out-spilled into a factual display, teaching the development of fashion or exhibiting the closer details brought up by the research.

Replica Displays

A collection of Displays created from our replica garments, studied and made as part of our research understanding the original garment.

We engaged Michelle to work with us when we were conserving an eighteenth century court mantua. The dress came to us in pieces and we needed to undertake conservation work on it. Michelle, with her excellent knowledge of historical garments, was able to work with our conservator and together they pooled their knowledge and expertise and pieced the garment back together. We all found her extremely easy to work with. Super-enthusiastic. Careful. Considered. And great fun! I would have no hesitation in recommending Michelle for work on re-creating historical garments. Michelle came to Coleridge Cottage and put on a beautiful exhibition of Georgian costumes. She interacted with our visitors, explaining about the different costumes and helping to bring them to life and provided a brilliant experience for our visitors. Her costumes and exhibition really helped to show visitors the variation in clothing for Georgian people. Bethan, Coleridge Cottage, National Trust

This has been a bit of a stop-starter due to other works and deadlines, but this is such an exciting mantua to be replicating that we’re itching to crack on with it again....

About Us

For us it all starts with the garments themselves – and some of them are M.E.S.S.Y! But, making sense of the logic behind the mess is one of our favourite jobs. Click here to read more of what we do and where we come from.
